ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an equality activist, fiber artist and a suffrage era nerd. I have created shows that explore the suffragist era in the US, paid tribute to an assortment of women in U.S. history and continue to explore the many different stereotypes that women navigate on a daily basis.
To honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 2020, I created a nationwide art and travel project called Her Flag. I collaborated with a woman artist in each of the 36 states that ratified the amendment into law to create a mammoth 18 x 26 foot flag. Her Flag has been exhibited at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, AR, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. and most recently the Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago. The documentary film created about this project was an Official Selection in the 2021 Sundance Film Festival ‘Satellite Series’.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marilyn Artus graduated with a bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma and then rolled into a commercial art career for 16 years. In 2003, She co-founded The Girlie Show, an all female/non-binary art festival in Oklahoma City that drew artisans from all over the United States to exhibit and showcase female talent, which ran for 10 years. In 2009, Marilyn began a full time career as an artist. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Oklahoma, New York, Tennessee, Washington, Rhode Island, Arkansas, Washington D.C., Illinois etc.
