ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork is intended to be an experience of works that strive to capture the observer’s attention, evoking emotions that help them make connections with their own life experiences regarding the intertwined exploitation and potential healing of both nature and the female experience within a patriarchal society. Through the fluid combination of industrial remnants and maternal art practices, my work seeks to challenge conventional narratives and advocate for a future defined by cooperation, mutual care, and respect for all life.
By emphasizing the tactile nature of my materials, I invite viewers to engage with the work on a primal, sensory level. The interplay between a strong narrative and the physical urge to touch transforms the viewer from a passive observer into an active participant in my personal story.
My work uses texture as a language of the heart, where roughness speaks of sorrow and light catches on the ridges of hope. For me, texture is the embodiment of the maternal journey—a layered map of a woman’s soul.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maegan Kirschner is an Austin-based mixed media artist whose work serves as a bridge across societal divides, including gender, race, sexuality, and economic inequality. Originally from Allen, Texas, Kirschner utilizes organic shapes and vibrant colors to express deep-seated emotions and social commentary.
Her creative practice is deeply rooted in two primary ideologies:
- Ecofeminism: Her work explores the parallels between the subjugation of women and the exploitation of nature in male-dominant societies, advocating instead for a world built on cooperation and mutual respect.
- Maternal Art: Drawing from her personal experience as a mother of six, she documents the history and evolving challenges of motherhood to foster a community dialogue on the meaning of the maternal experience.
