ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings explore the emotional landscape of women living within a culture that continues to demean, police, and diminish them. These works arise from witnessing a moment when misogyny is openly spoken from positions of power, when crude insults and political rollbacks signal a broader attempt to push women back into silence.
In Full-Body Scream, a woman clad only in delicate lace underwear—an outfit traditionally coded for male consumption—reclaims her own body through a raw, unrestrained cry. Instead of becoming an object, she becomes a force, her scream a refusal to be reduced or managed.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lori Moretti is a Boston-based contemporary figurative painter whose work explores the emotional and psychological complexities of womanhood, identity, and the socio-political forces that shape both. Her paintings capture moments of raw expression—grief, strength, defiance, and resilience—revealing what lies beneath the surface of composure.
Born with a crayon in hand, Lori spent her formative years immersed in the art room, studying under master painter Joseph Salafia before earning dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Fine Arts and Psychology from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1979. Alongside her studio practice, she built a successful career in creative communications, founding CM Communications in 1986, an award-winning agency representing leading arts, culture, and hospitality clients nationwide.
Lori has continued her artistic development through study with Mark Daniel Nelson, Robert Henry, and Jim Peters, expanding her practice through ongoing inquiry and exhibition. Her work has appeared in numerous juried and national shows, including Woman Made Gallery of Chicago, Bromfield Gallery in Boston, Art Center Sarasota in Florida, and the New Hampshire Art Association Biennial among others.
