ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores care as a radical, relational force. Through installation, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, and found objects, I transform domestic materials into tactile environments that reveal unseen labor, memory, and resilience. Influenced by feminist theory and the ethics of care, I understand tenderness as soft power – a force that resists through repair, reciprocity, and collective responsibility.
Armless Venus-like figures suggest vulnerability and resilience. Cyanotype-printed midwifery scissors symbolize protest, care, and reclaimed agency. This work honors the Jane Collective, the underground Chicago abortion service of the 1960s and 1970s, recognizing networks of care when reproductive freedom was denied.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lisa Cooreman is an interdisciplinary artist based in Indianapolis, Indiana, working across installation, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, and found objects. After teaching visual arts internationally for fourteen years in Japan, Vietnam, India, and Jordan, she returned to the United States to earn her MFA from Herron School of Art + Design in 2025. Her global teaching experiences and cross-cultural perspectives continue to inform her material practice and collaborative approach to making. Cooreman’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including publications with the Surface Design Association and exhibitions exploring contemporary fiber, installation, and social practice. She is currently a visual arts educator whose studio practice bridges research, teaching, and community engagement through interdisciplinary making.
