ARTIST STATEMENT
As a child I felt the absence of powerful females when I was taught to believe the most divine almighty being was a male made in man’s image. I think that is where misogyny is rooted. Male dominated politics and religions have buried female deities under layers of time. Ancient goddesses are now categorized as cults and myths, although I find solace in knowing their stories are still shared, in books, movies, and classrooms, thousands of years later. Our ancient ancestors revered goddesses. They believed divine females gave birth to seasons, destroyed demons, protected the innocent, healed disease, and created the arts. Goddesses foresaw the future, grew magical golden apples, arched over earth as a blanket of stars, and offered eternal life.
With paint and precious pigments on canvas, I resurrect goddesses from ancient cultures and place them in contemporary situations. It is my way of empowering the sacred feminine in this world full of misogyny and bullying at the highest levels of power.
She Died for Their Sins is legacy for Mahsa Amini, who was murdered by morality police for letting her hair fly free outside of her burka. She was 24. I painted her as a Persian Goddess.
