Demon Lover
mixed media
28 x 20 in.

The shifting boundaries of absence and presence have always fascinated me. I explore this idea in my work through the themes of life and death, body and spirit, past and present, mourning, and memory. Specifically, I am interested in how these themes are filtered through a feminine experience and expressed through a traditional female art form.

The content of this work is a Jungian archetypal shadow pattern, the demon lover. The process and materials that I used are inspired by spirit jars/memory jugs, an African-American vernacular art form used in grave decoration, and 19th century mourning art.
