ARTIST STATEMENT
My practice is an investigation of ancient craft techniques. My hands move as my predecessors’ did for thousands of years, connecting me to them and bringing their techniques through the present and into the future. My mind explores color and shape. The resulting work is formalistic and often spiritual.
From book bindings to patchwork festooned with embroidery and appliqué, weaving/tapestry and lace, the craft and needlework that began during my 1970s childhood continues to reflect the world around me as well as the art and craft traditions that inform it.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jennifer Bantz (b. 1970, Stamford, CT) is an artist based in New York City. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Ohio University with studies in film and sociology and has continued her fine art education in New York City at the Textile Arts Center, The Center for Book Arts where she has also taught, and as a volunteer conservation technician at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has participated in exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Woman Made Gallery, Chicago; and Cornell University. Her work is in collections across the United States.
