ARTIST STATEMENT
This artwork is part of a broader series titled “Her Name is Mother!” which I developed to foster a deeper comprehension of the female narrative through an ecofeminist perspective. By engaging in a close examination of Biblical texts, mythology, literature, and popular culture, I aimed to gain insight into the intricacies of women’s roles, their contributions, and their viewpoints within the narratives we share throughout history. Audiences are encouraged to reflect on themes such as the rejection of patriarchal violence, the marginalized hero, and the recontextualization of “wild” or “hysterical” feminine energy as a source of dynamic strength.
Additionally, this collection seeks to establish a connection between the subjugation of women and the exploitation of nature by patriarchal and capitalist frameworks. It is my aspiration that this series enables viewers to engage with the environments and realities in which women navigate, and to recognize how their contributions to the historical narrative, regardless of how disconcerting they may be within the confines of conventional public discourse, have significantly influenced our society. Furthermore, this collection acts as a cautionary message to those who contribute to the perpetuation of patriarchal and capitalist oppression of vulnerable individuals, communities, and the natural world.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
My painting practice, rooted in the vibrant city of Baltimore, is driven by a fierce commitment to creativity and social responsibility. Through my work, I aim to explore and celebrate the complexities of womanhood, while also addressing pressing issues of social justice and environmentalism. With an unwavering belief in the power of art to evoke change, I strive to use my platform as an artist to shed light on feminist discourse and spark conversations surrounding our relationship with nature.
My spiritual connection to the natural world serves as a guiding force in my exploration of activism and the intersection of womanhood, ultimately reflecting a deep reverence for the beauty and power of the feminine spirit.
