Description

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the stories, emotions, and experiences that connect people across generations through symbolism and realistic acrylic painting. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the arts has greatly influenced my creative journey. My father, an art teacher, and my grandfather, a graphic designer and artist, encouraged me from a young age to see art as a meaningful way to communicate ideas and tell stories. Working primarily with acrylic paint, I build my pieces through layering and blending techniques to create depth and realism. I strive to create paintings that are both visually engaging and emotionally impactful, inspiring viewers to appreciate the unseen stories that continue to shape our world.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emma Shortlidge is a 17 year old artist born and raised in Chicago. She has always been passionate about the arts. She started my career in art as early as 5 years old, taking classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. From then on, she knew that art would always be a part of me all my life. Her love for the arts can also be credited to her dad and grandfather, because their love for art and creativity is what helped introduce her to the creative world. She creates using a wide range of materials – mainly acrylic paint, but also pencil, pen, and colored pencils. In her work, she hopes to create meaningful art that not only is visually appealing, but also expands on bigger themes and personal narratives.
