ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dorothy C. Straughter discovered quilting in 2014 when a neighbor introduced her to an Underground Railroad quilt. This sparked a deep exploration of African diasporic history, reflected in her quilts on the Underground Railroad, Great Migration, and Negrobilia.
With a background in occupational therapy and neuroscience instruction at Chicago State University, Straughter integrates research on color, form, and human function into her work. Her studies, beginning at the Stony Island Arts Bank, provide historical insights that shape her artistry.
Her quilts have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Science and Industry, Hyde Park Art Center, Woman Made Gallery, Zhou B. Art Center, and Dank Haus, among others. Featured in Quilt Arts Magazine, The Beverly Review, DNAinfo, and WVON Radio (AM 1690), her work also includes a quilt in the Adler Planetarium’s permanent collection.
Straughter’s evolving quilt artistry continues to stitch together history and memory.
