ARTIST STATEMENT
This work from a recent series of paintings explores domestic abuse and the ways it is ignored or minimized by society. I address forms of violence such as emotional manipulation, unwanted touch, sexual comments, and misogyny by altering figures and color palettes to both reveal and conceal these experiences.
Through distortion and abstraction, the figures embody erasure—reflecting how victims are often unseen or silenced. My intuitive brushstrokes create layers of translucence and opacity, suggesting the tension between visibility and invisibility. A consistent, colorful palette softens the aggression of the subject matter, creating an entry point for viewers to engage with difficult themes.
Ultimately, my work encourages a deeper examination of how our society responds to abuse and how art can make space for difficult conversations around it.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hello my name is Dashiana Bingham I’m a contemporary artist who has graduated from Indiana University Northwest this spring. I majored in Fine arts and minored in psychology and I blend these two practices into my work. By discussing and dissecting topics that some would find taboo or hard to discuss. I aim to make these subjects more palatable to create discussion around these topics. Along with this I participated in the Gary Mural project as well with my peers as we aim to provide art and enrichment to the community. At the moment the artwork is displayed on campus until they can be affixed to the gary sears building. Along with this I have displayed my work in the spring thesis exhibit.
