ARTIST STATEMENT
As a narrative artist, my work reflect where I’m living and the people around me. I view my art as a story that serves as my journal of hopes, and a record of my family and community life. In “Lake Superior Fountain and Park/ Trans Affirming Street Side” my intention was to draw places that were safe to visit during Covid. This park is at the center of our city for folks from every walk of life. People are resting from the heat of the day, preparing to head home, and at the same time protestors advocate for trans and queer rights. It is a snapshot of life in my city.
Over the last 40 years I’ve depicted women seeking opportunities and equity in education, the work place, bodily autonomy in health care/abortion rights, and to live financially independent. The current regime threatens not just the progress we have made, but the acknowledgement of these rights at all! Women know who we are and we’re not going back. We are caretakers of community and family. We choose to have children or not. We decide how to define ourselves. We observe and listen and speak up. We seek to educate ourselves, our sisters and our brothers, and will continue to do so.
As a narrative artist I believe in depicting who we are and how best to live in a diverse community that listens and engages together building the future we need. I hope folks see themselves in my work.
