ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a photo-based artist whose work extends into textile and word-based practice to examine the performance of conformity demanded of women. Using symbols drawn from ordinary, often overlooked (often personal) materials, I question the curated surface of ‘polite’ representation. I am drawn to symbols of mythmaking, particularly objects that quietly enforce propriety and containment. My current work represents a lived resistance, a hard-won, late-in-life refusal of imposed identities, leaving a suffocating marriage, embracing a queer identity, and rediscovering a self, eroded by inherited expectation.
