ARTIST STATEMENT
As a fiber/mixed media artist, I create emotional narratives of the female experience within my conceptual art practice. I utilize repurposed objects historically coded as feminine to expose how women’s bodies, labor and identities are controlled and consumed. My art challenges the viewer to question the patriarchal system that demands submission while denying women full humanity. The repurposed precious objects, stripped of their initial significance, hold tension between endurance and resistance, revealing how deeply this system shapes intimacy, relationships, and self perception. In deconstructing these items they are transformed into symbols of empowerment, resistance, liberation and courage.
A Woman’s Work is Never Done showcases vintage collectible thimbles featuring the First Ladies of the United States. Each thimble is displayed on middle fingers where they are traditionally worn for domestic labor. The installation challenges how society has traditionally confined and commemorated women; even the most prominent in American history.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Amy Menousek is an Arizona-based conceptual mixed media artist with a BFA in Metals and Jewelry. She began her exploration of fiber art in 2010. Her latest body of work focuses on women’s shared experience within a patriarchal society. She finds it both cathartic and healing to draw from her personal experience in much of her work. Through this, she serves to strengthen the female collective, motivate others to share their voice, and provide a space where women feel seen and understood. Though much of her work addresses emotionally heavy themes, she approaches them with a sense of lighthearted humor that captures even the random passerby’s attention. She enjoys creating art that is deeply thought provoking and highlights women’s experience, strength and resilience. She exhibits nationwide and is a member of Five15Arts Collective in Phoenix, Arizona.
