ARTIST STATEMENT
Silence is not merely a lack of words. When speech is quashed, meaning is distorted and fabrication takes hold. Power is no longer pursued through truth, but through silence. This work responds to that condition. The figure is outwardly restrained, but unbound within. She is caught in the events of the moment, yet remains resolute. She sees what is happening and remembers everything. She represents the point where oppression and perseverance collide. Refusal becomes the act. She will not obey to serve another purpose.
And no, sir—she will not be quiet.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I’m an emerging oil painter based in Indiana, originally from Virginia Beach. Growing up near the ocean profoundly shaped my perspective, providing a near-constant source of strength and peace. It remains a grounding presence in both my life and my work. My years of working with emotionally vulnerable students in crisis intervention inform the way I observe people, the stories they carry, and the emotions often left unspoken.
In my first year of painting, my work has been selected for multiple juried and competitive exhibitions and has received several awards and distinctions. I paint because I became deeply drawn to the way oil paint moves and the range of expression it allows. My work shares what can’t always be expressed directly, while leaving space for viewers to bring their own experiences and meaning.
