ARTIST STATEMENT
My last self-portrait was painted in 2019 and since then I have not only aged, I have also experienced great loss. I remember my mother saying to me when she was in her 80’s, “I look in the mirror, and I don’t know who that is”. Now I understand. I am still young and vibrant and wanting on the inside, but I am weathered and worn on the outside, wearing my age and my wisdom and my grief. I have portrayed myself as I see myself, but not as I feel myself. I look directly and unabashedly at the viewer, letting you know, this is who I am. And although it is true that women over a certain age become invisible, you may not see me, but I see you.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Amanda Freymann is an artist living within the beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park in Beverly Shores, IN. After working in trade and museum publishing for over forty years, producing artist monographs and museum exhibition catalogues, she now has time to paint, collage and work in clay, taking inspiration from the wooded dunes and nearby lakeshore that surround her.
