ARTIST STATEMENT
As the daughter of Palestinian refugees, a visibly Muslim woman, and a first-generation American, I carry trauma, freedom, and misconceptions as part of my identity. My work is motivated by the ways societal fears and a lack of knowledge can strengthen misconceptions and create disconnection within humanity. I attempt to reflect my reality to the audience that shapes and is shaped by it. My practice is also a means of processing my own traumas—of identity, of double consciousness, and of not knowing where I belong. Through creating, I explore how to claim myself in the spaces I inhabit. I use painting, wearables, found objects, and performance photography to express these inner struggles and contradictions.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Amal Azzam is a Muslim American artist based in Milwaukee, WI. Her creative journey began with studying graphic design at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She began working in the nonprofit sector at ArtWorks and moved onto various creative roles with varying nonprofits. She has held positions in diverse nonprofit organizations, including those focused on political nonpartisan work, arts advocacy, and refugee resettlement efforts. Additionally, Amal co-founded Fanana Banana, an influential arts movement in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The initiative is committed to establishing inclusive art spaces specifically tailored for Muslim, Middle Eastern and North African (MENA), marginalized and underserved artists.
