The Aesthetics of Wellness

2015

Description

Mass-media regularly employs a homogeneous image of young, slim, white, able bodies in its marketing and portrayal of “good health.” The over-representation of this archetype excludes the experiences of individuals whose bodies, cultures, or beliefs fall outside of mainstream aesthetics and ideals.  This exhibition challenges perceptions of what wellness “looks” like by exploring holistic practices of individuals marginalized by race, age, socioeconomic class, size, gender, ability, or sexual orientation. The show also works to interrogate ways in which racial bias, income disparity, and social inequality impact one’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
