Shelly Jyoti

Shelly Jyoti is a visual and interdisciplinary artist based in Baroda, India. She received her Master’s degree in English literature in 1980 and later, she trained as a fashion designer from India’s premier fashion school in New Delhi. Her interdisciplinary work in designing garments, drawing, painting, sculpture, and poetry writing appeared in a number of solo and group exhibitions in India, North America, and Singapore over the past 10 years. Her works are part of several public and private collections.

In March 2008-09, she was invited by Woman Made Gallery to exhibit her Beyond Mithila series. The show traveled to Mumbai and Delhi. In April 2007, she was curator of an exhibition of 180 paintings at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi that was well received. Her artworks have received significant critical attention and have been reviewed by both print and television media.

Currently, she works on environmental projects and with special children with Autism disabilities in the capacity of a board member for Disha and Socleen in Gujarat. Her upcoming project is entitled, Indigo Narratives, in which she proposes to investigate the social, economic and political situations affected by the tyranny of ‘indigo’ planters on natives of Champaran and further investigates Mahatma Gandhi’s intervention in Champaran.
