Joyce Owens
Joyce Owens has a MFA in painting from Yale University, a BFA from Howard University, and her work is in many public and private collections and publications. Her paintings are currently showing in Monrovia, Liberia, and Georgetown, Guyana at the United States embassies, and at NATO in Brussels, Belgium. Owens’ work received rave reviews at the Parish Gallery in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. in a two-person exhibition with photographer Bobby honoring President Barack Obama during January of 2009.
Other highlights of her career include solo exhibitions at Nicole Gallery, Concordia University, two at Elmhurst College, ARC Gallery, Carthage College, and Woman Made Gallery, winning two international art competitions with artist Faith Ringgold and Artnews critic Margaret Hawkins as jurors. She has participated in numerous two-person and group exhibitions at The University of Alabama in the Paul R. Jones Collection, The Spertus Museum, The DuSable Museum, The Chicago Cultural Center, South Shore Cultural Center, Chicago, Koehnline Museum at Oakton College, The University of Pennsylvania Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University, Howard University, Connecticut College, Gallery Guichard and Gerald Griffin Gallery, Chicago, The Butridge Gallery in Austin, Texas, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Homewood Studios in Minneapolis, Artjaz Gallery in Philadelphia, and others.
Owens’ figurative paintings and assemblages address issues of race and gender. She teaches painting and drawing and is the curator of the galleries at Chicago State University.
