ARTIST STATEMENT
I was thinking about the birthing process when I made this work, specifically the toll it takes on a woman’s body, how we carry our scars with us for the rest of our lives. It’s also about resilience and the immense flexibility of our bodies. This is a hand built clay piece.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Growing up in Aledo, Illinois, a small town in Western Illinois, shaped Viktoria Ford’s work. Playful interactions with the natural world stimulated her creativity from an early age before any formal art education began in college.
In 1971 she received a Rotary International Fellowship and studied Metals and Industrial Design at Kunst øg Håndsverk Skole in Oslo, Norway. After, Viktoria completed her BFA in Metals from the University of Illinois, followed by a BFA in painting, a MFA in Sculpture/Papermaking and later a MA in Art Education.
Viktoria’s working history includes being Director of Research and Development of paper fibers and dyes for Frank Gallo’s Editions in Cast Paper, an artisan producing art editions for the same company, teaching art at collage and elementary levels and as an exhibition designer and preparator at Krannert Art Museum at UIUC.
Viktoria has maintained an art practice throughout her adult life. She exhibits her work both nationally and internationally.
