ARTIST STATEMENT
Dementia is so devastating, not only for the person with dementia; also for their families and dear friends. Colorful, healthy thoughts change to black and grey, then finally become ghostly white – falling away one by one.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Phyllis Lear was born and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana – “the heart of Cajun Country”. Lear comes from a long line of seamstresses. Her grandmother, aunt, and sisters sew, knit, tat, and crochet.
Lear began exploring the fabric yo-yo (Suffolk Puff) as an art form in 2018. Traditionally used as a quilting technique, Lear appropriates the yo-yo as a module for building fine art pieces. Compositionally, she prefers to break away from the traditional rectangular format and allows her compositions to spread across the wall and sometimes spill to the floor. Many of Lear’s quilted works speak to current events as well as personal experiences.
