ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the patterns through which memory, perception, and systems of meaning shape human experience. Using moving images, repetition, montage, and appropriated cultural materials, I investigate the tension between individual agency and the larger social, political, and economic structures that organize behavior. Repetition serves as both a formal strategy and a conceptual framework, revealing how habits, rituals, and collective myths can simultaneously constrain and expand human potential. Working across experimental film, installation, interactive media, collage, and printmaking, I draw from sources ranging from early cinema and popular culture to music, physics, and Eastern philosophy. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, my works unfold as recursive systems in which memory, desire, and history continually reassert themselves.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kasumi is a multimedia artist whose work unfurls at the intersection of memory, perception, and technology. Drawing upon formal training in art and music, alongside years spent living and working in Japan and Germany, the work investigates memory, repetition, and the systems through which meaning is constructed. Experimental films, immersive installations, interactive media, and printed works have been presented internationally at venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Rocket Arena. Honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacDowell Fellowship, and the Cleveland Arts Prize.
