ARTIST STATEMENT
I create mixed media collage art that blends digital and analog techniques to explore femininity, identity, and cultural inheritance. Using vintage ephemera, found imagery, manipulated photographs, and symbolic objects, I construct surreal, female-centered worlds where memory, mythology, and social expectation collide.
My current series, “The Tattered Rhyme”, reexamines familiar nursery rhymes as some of our earliest lessons in gender, behavior, and belonging. Fragments of these verses appear throughout the work, creating a dialogue between text and image that reveals the often contradictory messages embedded within childhood stories. Through layered symbolism and fractured narratives, I investigate how ideals of innocence, obedience, beauty, and virtue are taught and internalized. By reclaiming these familiar narratives, my work invites viewers to question the cultural scripts that shape girlhood and womanhood.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Natalie Goyeneche Armstrong is a mixed media collage artist whose work explores femininity, identity, memory, and cultural narratives through layered imagery and symbolic storytelling. She holds a BA in English and Anthropology from Louisiana State University and an MA in the Teaching of Writing from Humboldt State University. After a career in education, she established her studio practice in 2022, creating narrative-driven bodies of work that combine digital and analog collage techniques with vintage ephemera, found imagery, and dimensional elements. Her work has been exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Monmouth Museum, and the R.W. Norton Art Gallery. Through serialized collections, Armstrong examines the stories, myths, and cultural frameworks that shape individual and collective experience.
