ARTIST STATEMENT
The Brie Show Studio encompasses my interdisciplinary and multimedia practice, which includes painting, wearable art, and experiential, immersive exhibitions all rooted in examining the female experience. Drawing inspiration from fashion, history, and everyday life, I often revisit stories that have traditionally been told through a male lens, reimagining them from the perspective of the women at their center. My paintings serve as both personal reflection and cultural commentary. Whereas “the feminine” is often dismissed as unserious in visual art, I forefront my practice in a hyper-femininity that challenges this view, inviting viewers to instead engage with the inherent power that I find in vulnerable and honest stories of girlhood and womanhood. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, I embrace imperfections and focus on layered symbolism. I always look to find extensions of my practice and create spaces for conversation about identity, connection and womanhood.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Brie Hines is a Chicago-based, self-taught painter and founder of The Brie Show. Her work has been exhibited throughout Chicago, including a solo residency at The Hoxton Hotel Chicago and an exhibition at Jackson Junge Gallery. In 2024, Hines was awarded a grant through the West Town Chamber of Commerce, which included a six-month gallery and studio lease. During that residency, she developed and exhibited a new body of work, “Letters to My Younger Self” in conjunction with Gertie.
Working largely outside of traditional fine arts institutions, Hines has built her practice independently through exhibitions, collaborative dinners, artist-led events, and creative partnerships across the city. Through this community-centered approach, she has cultivated a growing audience and established a distinctive voice within Chicago’s contemporary art scene.
