ARTIST STATEMENT
My piece is a reflection on the Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1970s, where women fought for the right to not only be able to take birth control, but to also bring more attention to the side effects of the pill and how it impacted women’s health. As a woman with PCOS who was put on birth control due to an ovarian cyst rupture when I was 16, I have had my fair share of side effects with the birth control pill. These women fought for themselves and us to have control over our own bodies, for more research to be conducted surrounding women’s reproductive health, and for the ability to choose our futures. These women showed us that we are more than our bodies, and that reproductive health and prevention should not be solely a woman’s issue. These pieces are a statement about the stereotypes surrounding women and societal expectations, and are a picture of strong women both past and present who fought, and continue to fight for bodily rights.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lauren Jesson is a Graphic Designer, Illustrator, and Artist based in southern New Mexico. Her multidisciplinary practice is a combination of art and design with a focus on subject matter and layout, exploring varying styles and themes.
She is the owner of JessonDesign, a studio where she specializes in and sells artwork, apparel, and accessories at an affordable price.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from New Mexico State University in 2021, and started her design business the same year, encompassing her creativity and belief that art is for everyone.
Lauren has had her work shown in multiple group exhibitions, including one in New York City, and another in Madrid, Spain.
