Description

ARTIST STATEMENT

Taking double-exposure photographs, incorporating far-away views and close-ups of plants and landscapes in one frame, allows me to “connect with place.” Working this way allows me to show multiple images in one view. I take the photographs using a film camera and have the negatives scanned so I can print them on tissue paper. The subject matter are natural scenes from my hikes in the fields and the prairies. These mixed-media paintings are created by embedding the photographs printed on tissue paper in the beeswax paint as collage. The molten paint is applied under and above the photo as a collage layer and are at once a painting and a photograph. These mixed-media works have the luminosity of beeswax while maintaining the graphic nature of photography.
