ARTIST STATEMENT
While being away from home at college, I realized how unique my family origins and Appalachian traditions are. Everything I do is subconsciously influenced by my family. My perspective of life and the world around me has been so influenced by them that I see them in all things. I even see them in the things we take for granted like the sky.
Although I am no longer in Appalachia I carry the traditions of my family with me. I feel like it has taken generations to get me to where I am. My family was forced to be in the south due to slavery, and after they had no resources to go anywhere else. I like to think that I am the one breaking the cycle and starting a new life in a place I have chosen.
