ARTIST STATEMENT
Through mixed media sculpture I work to access something beyond our concrete world and to find meaning and comfort as I do so. Recent themes have included healing, refuge and ritual. Responding to materials often drives my work. Handmade paper is an important medium for me, but I also use fabrics, bamboo, wire, plastics, aluminum cans and shells, among many materials. I often challenge myself with these materials, choosing, for example, to use only what I have at hand, or to use only red materials, or to use only soft things.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Laurie LeBreton is a sculptor who uses a wide variety of materials – handmade paper, bike tires, and aluminum cans, among them – to express her sense of humor and delight. She has exhibited widely, in the Chicago area, nationally and internationally, including solo exhibits at the Epiphany Art Center, Chicago, Illinois; the Quad Cities Airport, Moline, Iowa; the Orland Park Library, Orland Park, Illinois and the University of Michigan Library, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her most recent exhibition was a three-person show at Oliva Gallery, Chicago, Illinois. LeBreton received an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College, Chicago in 2010. She is an alumna of the Center Program at the Hyde Park Art Center.
