ARTISTS STATEMENT
My artistic practice is rooted in exploring the layered landscapes of Black womanhood, weaving together spirituality, ancestry, and lineage through intuitive storytelling. Working primarily with collage, I create visual narratives that honor resilience, wisdom, and interconnectedness within the Black community. My work seeks to bridge generations—looking to the past, celebrating the present, and imagining futures for the children yet to come. Each piece I create is a meditation on the relationship between memory and identity, inspired by the stories passed down in my family and the larger cultural legacies that shape us. Earth Carries Us All reflects the universality of care and connection, transcending family structures and representing a spiritual or ancestral form of maternity. Similarly, Tending the Bloom is a reflection on intergenerational wisdom, imagining a sacred space where elders lovingly guide the young among lush, abundant greenery—a metaphor for the seeds of knowledge and care passed down through time. Finally, Generations Rooted is an homage to lineage and transformation, inspired by the concept of seven generations and the idea of healing through intentional acts of love and care that ripple across time. Through my art, I aim to create spaces of reflection and empowerment, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own histories and imagine new possibilities for future generations. My practice is not just about creating beautiful imagery but also about crafting visual stories that honor and amplify the narratives of Black women, who have always been at the forefront of healing, leading, and shaping our world.
