ARTISTS STATEMENT
My work is centered on fiber and it’s materiality and ephemeral issues of identity, motherhood and memory. I believe fibers never let go of their history, even as they are manipulated into surprising new forms. I also believe fiber is my collaborator. In some cases I work in concert with its material properties, in others I stretch, pull, knot or sew it into it into submission. I also look to other materials, like paint and photography, to see how they might “act” like fiber in an effort to expand my storytelling. It is this experimentation with fiber and the laborious process of weaving, winding, knotting or layering that creates a meditative mode for me: one that imbues me or binds me to the work created. It is a simultaneous act of validation and of devotion.
