ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is inspired by family memories and beautiful scenes of nature. Minhwa, traditional Korean folk art, is weaved into my pieces, whether through vibrant colors or whimsical, natural motifs such as vast mountains and colorful waves. The fusion between my personal style and Minhwa is a direct reflection of my sense of identity and the things that I find beautiful in this world. In Minhwa, all artistic choices have a meaning, and with every new brush stroke and layer of paint, I hope to evoke feelings of happiness, prosperity, and longevity. At its core, I want my work to evoke a sense of childlike joy because my art’s biggest influence, even aside from Minhwa, is children’s art, both art that has been created for and created by kids. When my daughters would bring me their crayon drawings and school projects, I’d be mesmerized by how easily they were able to convey pure emotion through even just a simple heart shape. The picture books I’d read to them also played a huge part in my illustrative style. I wish that whoever views my art feels the same happiness I feel when I create it.
