ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a mixed media artist. The works I have presented for the member’s show involve cut text segments. When I work with cut text, I am removing words and phrases out of context and reformatting them into a type of vignette narrative. When I lay sheets full of cut words and phrases in front of me, I feel as if I am laying my imaginative thoughts out in physical form, and I can pick out, touch and use words without them getting lost in the chaos of my own constantly full mind. When I use cut text, I often find myself following a path directly in line with my own thoughts, fears, yearnings and joys, often with a playful or humorous element. More to say on 2 of the pieces submitted: “House Thoughts” is an exploration on the theme of housing and home. From the lamenting about refugees, to the housing crisis, to my own yearning for the type of home that seems out of reach. “The Long Quiet Episode” is a direct reflection of my experiences and observations about the pandemic, during the pandemic.
