ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is about nature and color and the harmonization of the opposites: black and white. In no other part of my life am I able to immerse myself completely into a project where time melts away and memories and dreams fill my landscape. I have relived a whole relationship in the process of creating one portrait.
I like to start out with charcoal (the way I started my art exploration 45 years ago), and then bring it to life with colors that mix and react to it. Watercolors and acrylics are my go-to for florals, since they allow the fluidity of a blooming landscape. I add depth with oil pastel sticks and enjoy the movement of blending them with my fingertips.
When I share each piece, my hope is that the viewer will nod their head and agree with me. Yes, this piece makes sense. It has a beginning, middle and end, and the flow is logical. A good story.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I have been making art for more than 45 years. I operated a print shop and publishing firm for 25 years and fell in love with black and white and highlight those colors in most of my work. I currently create almost every day in Michigan farm country. My neighbors across the street are five horses. I paint in my small home, on just about every surface I find available.
I have shown my work at Northville Art Gallery, Los Laguna Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA, and Woman Made Gallery, in Chicago, where I am a member. I have an upcoming display at Turner-Dodge House, sponsored by Art Council of Greater Lansing. I have been scheduled to exhibit at the East Lansing Public Art Gallery in May 2025, and coincidentally, at Katalyst Gallery in Lansing the same month.
I have reviewed more than 50 Online Artist Tutorials and published them in my weekly Blog, “ArtVentures in Learning” (available on my website). I have also challenged myself to use social media to publish my “Portraits of My Heroes” series. My goal is to publish 100 portraits; I have made almost 60 so far. They are available on my website.
