ARTIST STATEMENT
My work aims to reconstruct the identity of Black women, who have historically been misrepresented or erased within community and family structures. Through exploring signs, symbols, and language found in everyday life, from slavery to the present, I tell the stories of women who have often been marginalized. By creating a visual language that offers a new perspective on their lives, my goal is to elevate the narrative of Black women. I envision them as goddesses—powerful and revered—challenging the historical constraints that have denied them this recognition. My art seeks to honor their contributions and redefine their place in the collective consciousness, offering a fresh and empowering view of their enduring legacy.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gyona Rice is a dynamic multimedia artist and printmaker hailing from Inkster, Michigan, with a BFA in Graphic Design. She loves blending her design skills with printmaking to create vibrant, eye-catching work. Gyona’s art is all about shaking up the narrative—she’s on a mission to reconstruct the identity of Black women, using everyday signs, symbols, and language that have shaped their lives from slavery to today. She brings their stories to life, portraying Black women as powerful goddesses, and challenging the roles history has assigned them. With a playful and energetic approach, Gyona’s work celebrates Black women’s strength, beauty, and resilience. She’s here to honor their legacy and make sure their stories shine brightly in the collective consciousness.
