2024 WMG Programs

Friday Women Artists Paint n’ Sip!

Woman Made Gallery is excited to invite you to our monthly Friday paint n’ sip series on women artists! During each 2-hour art event participants will have the opportunity to learn about a different influential woman artist from history and then create artwork in their style. Past sessions focused on Hilma af Klint, the pioneer of abstract painting and collage artist, Mickalene Thomas. In April we learned about flower painters throughout history while creating their own masterpiece.

Each session consists of a 15-minute lesson that includes a handout about the woman artist we are focusing on followed by a 90 minute inspired art session. Wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and assorted snacks will be served and you will leave with your completed artwork. Classes in 2024 are led by different WMG Team Members.

Friday Night Paint ‘n Sip Workshop: Ruth Asawa

Date: Friday, May 31, 2024 from 7–9 PM CST

Where: Woman Made Gallery | 1332 S. Halsted St. Chicago, IL 60607

This mixed media workshop is inspired by the works of Ruth Asawa. There will be opportunities to paint, draw, and work with fiber and wire. Drawing from life and nature, we’ll engage in meditative art practices to create abstract forms. While known best as a sculptor, Asawa’s use of line (in space and on paper) teaches us about the nature of materials themselves.

Artists of all levels are welcome!

This workshop will be of special interest to anyone interested in learning and experimenting with: wire sculpture, chainmail or making chains, embroidery, knitting/crochet with unconventional materials, abstract drawing, fractal art, etc)

This class is led by Bekah Baker, Woman Made’s Gallery Assistant. Bekah Baker is a multidisciplinary artist using scientific and artistic strategies alongside her academic art history education to create works grounded in our experience with the material world. Born in Los Angeles, she is currently working and studying Curation and Chemistry in Chicago.

Mary Winter and Beate Minkovski will guide this inspiring workshop, where we will explore the medium of clay while having fun delving into our ancient heritage of Goddess using our own Goddess energy to hand-build a female figurine of our own. No previous experience required.

The cost of a ticket includes all materials and a single firing. We will provide clay, terra sigillata, tools and guidance in what you would like to create. Light bites and refreshments will be offered, as well.

Don’t miss out on this empowering experience, space is very limited! Reserve your spot today and get ready to unleash your inner goddess!

Who is She?

A Goddess, a ritual object, votive offering, vehicle for working magic or fulfilling wishes, talisman for protection, teaching or initiation device, or a woman’s embodiment of herself. Join Mary Winter and Beate Minkovski in our workshop working freestyle, exploring the medium of clay. We will delve into our ancient heritage of Goddess using our own Goddess energy to hand-build a female figurine of our own. Your figure will be once fired and returned to you at a later date. We will have some engobes available (colored clay slip) to brush onto the surface of your work to enhance the surface and decorate if it is wanted.
