ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, my fiber works lend a space for human emotions, radical otherness, and a sense of care to the places they inhabit. My work concerns polyvalent human experiences like the passing of time, memory, and death. Through introspection, I document the meanings, fragmentation, unconsciousness, and residue of day-to-day human activities and interactions through stitches, markings, and dyes. Through repetitive stitches and movements, the art object becomes a memorial of past-reality constructions while splitting open an entrance into the uncanny.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kris (Di) Wu is a queer, biracial East-Asian multi-disciplinary artist and emerging art therapist. Born and raised in various international cities in Asia and America, Wu found her/their passion in witnessing and documenting human interactions and the complexities of cultural assimilation through art. Using art as a vehicle, Wu has worked with artists with intellectual disabilities and black and brown youth in the south and west side of Chicago. Through these interactions, Wu continues to find power and meaning in others’ narratives as well as their own.
