Description

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is narrative. I draw inspiration from Victorian women’s history & gender roles, gothic literature, children’s books, fairy tales, myths, and poetry. The narrative of a piece informs which materials I choose, however, beads are present in all of my work. I hand sew each bead – and most collage elements – onto fabric. For me, hand sewing references a tradition of arts and crafts made by women. I often incorporate wreaths (Victorian mourning art) and vintage found objects and photos (personal history, time & age). My mixed media assemblages are presented in shadow box frames to create a focused, poetic, intimate space.
