ARTIST STATEMENT
Life in the big city has been my initial inspiration for painting. The unifying theme of my work deals with urban bureaucracy.
The neckties in the paintings are references to power and the corporate world as they relate to our society.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martha Zackey (1943-2012) was born in Chicago. She received a B. F. A. from Northern Illinois University and M. F.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington. She later lived in Oregon, New York and Wisconsin where she exhibited in both group and solo shows. While in Portland, Oregon she was awarded an Arts in Public Places Grant by the Portland Metropolitan Arts Commission.
Zackey taught at Indiana University, Bloomingrton, IN; Mount Hood Community College, Gresham, OR; and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, OR. She also taught at Munson Williams Proctor, Utica, NY, The Rome Art and Community Center, Rome, NY and the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton, NY.
In addition to painting stage sets for operas and plays for The Musical Arts Center at Indiana University and for the City of Portland, Zackey had editorial illustration experience with the Portland Opera Association, Inc., Die Meistersinger campaign; Northwest Magazine, Oregonian, Portland, OR; and Leisure Magazine, Keene, NH. Her work was featured in such publications as Portland Review, Spectrum Magazine, and Portland Magazine.
In 2005 she was selected for Signature Membership in the Central New York Water Color Society.
Shortly before her passing Martha was named a Watercolor Wisconsin 2010 award winner by Racine Art Museum.
