ARTIST STATEMENT
Cunningham’s concept-based work makes use of a carefully crafted symbolic language, a desire to make the personal universal, audience engagement, and an exploration of a wide variety of materials and processes. She explores the relationships between text, form, and meaning and often makes use of multiples in both process and form. She creates visual poetry using isolated words, form, and materials to convey an unwritten story based on her own experiences. She has exhibited widely across the US.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Stephanie Cunningham is a Professor of Graphic Design in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History at Florida Atlantic University–Fort Lauderdale. She received a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and an M.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame. Her work embraces a wide variety of materials and themes and is unified by contemplative reflections on contemporary life that record both a personal and universal perspective. The use of text, layered symbolism, and multiples are often common visual themes. Her work has been exhibited widely and recognized by a number of awards and acquisitions. Her work has appeared in publications including Prix Ars Electronica, The Computer in the Visual Arts, and Eye.
