ARTIST STATEMENT
“I am a Puerto Rico based conceptual installation artist, who works primarily with fibers and textiles through a crochet method. My work has developed into two main avenues of expression: strong, colorful designs; and concepts.
In many of my large site-specific conceptual installations, there are comprehensive ideas built into the finished pieces. Sometimes these pieces incorporate the use of additional forms of communication (e.g., Braille, Morse code, visualized sound wave frequencies, and energy fields), to express my intention.
My concepts focus on social issues of oppression, racism, abject classism and corruption, all whilst juxtaposed against deliberate underlying themes of positivity. Having lived in Puerto Rico for the past 18 years I have been educated and witness to these issues, which has created an impetus in my path to becoming the artist I am today. Although this beautiful Caribbean-island setting is inherent with limitations regarding its colonial US territory status, it has been the catalyst in cultivating my personal and professional growth. I make the most of this polarized energy, which is both constant and palpable on the island. Continuing in this mindset, I thrive on working within the perimeters of the colors and materials I have before me. I remove my outdoor pieces (which are in urban areas), after months of exposure to the weather conditions as an integral part of my practice. And, in order to maintain a sustainable practice, I wash and recycle the yarn to be used for future installations.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
As an active participant in the urban art scene, I have a growing portfolio of site-specific installations as well as commissioned pieces with corporate clients. My design series uses a strong color palette with vivid patterns, and my conceptual installations beckon viewers to interact, digest and understand the social issues I bring forth.
My interests with regard to visual expression, lie within the realm of communicating and expressing what is in our aether.
