ARTIST STATEMENT
Since childhood, I have been passionate about color, texture, and form. My artistic focus revolves around textiles and the body. My chosen mediums are costume design for performance, wearable art for the individual, and textile collages.
In creating individual textile art pieces I dye, paint, collage, and stitch into fabrics to bring out the story within the fibers, expressing my love of color and texture as a surface designer. As a visual artist for the performing arts, I am both an independent creator as well as a collaborator. I have chosen this medium as a means to create work that tells stories and shares experiences through the choice of how the body is clothed, draped and accessorized. I design the costumes as well as take part in creating them through sewing, draping, sculpting, dyeing, painting, and ageing.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Cybele Moon is a visual artist, costume designer and educator. She was born, raised and inspired to create art while growing up in Detroit, became a working artist while living in Chicago, and is currently based in Philadelphia. As a visual artist, Moon works with textiles, cut-paper collage and multi-media Installations. Her work has been exhibited at galleries, as part of public events, and with community organizations in Illinois, California, Connecticut and Philadelphia.
As a costume designer she has worked with theater and dance companies, as well as colleges and universities to design and create costumes for over 140 productions in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New Orleans and many other locations across the United States. Moon has held full-time Academic appointments with Wesleyan University and East Carolina University, in addition to Adjunct positions with CalArts, Temple University, the University of the Arts, and Austin Community College.
She has given numerous guest lectures at higher education institutions in California, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Connecticut, and Illinois. Moon is the recipient of the multiple grants from academic institutions and arts organizations. These have included a Philadelphia Illuminate the Arts grant, two Chicago CAAP grants, and a Creative Campus Initiative grant to originate a new performance/installation at Wesleyan University, among many others.
