ARTIST STATEMENT
I Paint Faces hedonistically I approach the canvas deep, rich colors envelop my hands I’m knee deep in delicious, wild textures as messy AF I glue, draw & paint my pleasure faces, so many faces, caught in a wind storm about to be blown away or maybe swallowed whole Here but not all the way here just a peek and then poof! the face hides away once again Impermanence Wishing the artwork will be When I am not I see faces everywhere in clouds, walls, mailboxes I approach a canvas with my tools and whisper, Show me yourself when a face emerges I’m sometimes surprised well, hello and who are you? I think they could be ghosts – the ghosts in my mind – of people I once knew – or wanted to know of past lives- of future friends – of myself I see faces everywhere – memory and emotion take residence on a face i like to read them after I paint them – in awe of the story so different yet so alike Like us when a face emerges I feel so lucky I feel so grateful for the company.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Annie aims to create images that are steeped in nostalgic joy and vibrant longing. Internationally exhibited Israeli-American artist, Annie Wood, was born and raised in Hollywood, California. Annie was a dating game show host (on the nationally syndicated show, BZZZ! Making her one of the first solo female dating game show hosts in the history of television!) She was a guest on The Tonight Show and has appeared on several TV shows and films. These days, she spends much of her time writing (author of Just a Girl in the Whirl) & creating art. Annie enjoys creating with a variety of mediums to draw and paint figurative stories and scenes. She is moved by memories (both real and imagined) and surreal quirkiness. Annie agrees with writer, Chuck Palahniuk, who famously said, Everything you do shows your hand. Everything’s a self portrait. Everything’s a diary. Growing up in a vibrant middle eastern home filled with hamsas and evil eyes, Annie sometimes incorporates these symbols in her work. She’s inspired by her hometown, Hollywood, California and her life in the entertainment industry, and by her past life as a flapper in the 1920s. 🙂 Annie’s work has appeared in many group exhibits across the country and her last solo exhibit showcased trailblazing women, Pardon Me While I Blaze Some Trails was at the Mainstay Gallery in Santa Monica. Her solo exhibit before that, Beautiful Imperfections, took place in Venice, Italy and the one before that Annie Wood in Hollywood, in Hollywood, California.
Annie finds anything & everything in life to be inspiring, meaningful, strange, crazy, wild, beautiful, maddening and…art.
