Artist Statement
Through collaged materials, I create joyful works exploring my Mexican American identity and heritage through prints, installations, publications, and performative situations. Through collage and recontextualizing cultural symbols, objects, zapateado (Mexican folkloric dance) garments, and fashion magazines, my works create a displacement of culture. My practice has changed throughout this pandemic as new install and documentation boundaries had to be established for my artwork. I balance all of these components and use my backyard as a tool to show the festivities of my community and family in vibrant ephemeral spaces.
About the Artist
Marylu E. Herrera is a Chicago-based artist with a focus on print media and collage. Through collaged materials, she creates colorful work exploring her Mexican American identity and heritage through prints, installations, and publications. Balancing all of these components she also equips the use of her backyard as a tool to show the festivities of my community and family in vibrant ephemeral spaces. She received her BFA in Studio Art from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston at Tufts University in 2019 and is currently attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for her MFA in Printmedia. Her work has been included in the Artist Book Special Collections from Tufts University, on Bitchmedia.org, and Issue 84 of Bitch Magazine. Her most recent work was shown at SITE Galleries and on LOCUS: VI.
