Britni Mara is a visual artist living and working in Chicago, Illinois. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Bradley University and was a post-baccalaureate student at the Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy.
Britni’s work has long revolved around dissecting weighty topics. She has found a way to highlight those topics by altering her medium and remaining true to her love for abstraction. In a time where an artists’ visual aesthetic is not new, but rather is shared; she believes it is extremely important to bolster meaning over visuals. Her work has tackled topics like sexuality, femininity and most recently, sustainability.
Since 2019, Britni Mara has focused primarily on creating an eco-friendly art practice with the aim of starting conversations around environmentalism. She creates her own “paint” from entirely edible sources like turmeric, blueberries, beets and avocado pits. She uses her homemade paints on unprimed canvas. Using charcoal, which is a naturally occurring black, and chalk, she has found a way to create a complete spectrum of hues without toxic chemicals. Britni’s sole intention is to create pause for the viewer in whatever body of work she’s developing. She believes questioning the norm and pushing societal boundaries are the main objectives to being an artist.
