“While my work comes under the umbrella of geometric abstraction, I practice an esthetic I describe as lush minimalism: a sensuous surface married to the austerity of the grid. The lushness comes courtesy of encaustic, which has been my primary medium for almost two decades; the grid has been a touchstone for most of my career.

My 20th career solo, Silk Road, took place recently in New York City at the OK Harris Gallery. I am also represented in Atlanta by the Marcia Wood Gallery (where I recently curated Luxe, Calme et Volupte: A Meditation on Visual Pleasure); in Boston by the Arden Gallery; in Larchmont, New York, by Kenise Barnes Fine Art, and elsewhere. I am the author of The Art of Encaustic Painting, which has become the standard reference on the subject. My work is in the collections of the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, N.J.; Library Collections of the State University of New York, Albany; Wheaton College Art Museum, Norton, Mass., and a number of corporate collections. I am a visiting lecturer at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and the founder of the National Conference of Encaustic Painting at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, Mass. I divide my time between Massachusetts and Manhattan. You are invited to visit my website, www.joannemattera.com, and my blog, www.joannemattera.blogspot.com.”
