I began making work about memory and grief three years ago after my father and grandfather passed away in a span of only seven months. The series started by simply documenting the objects that were left behind and also by taking portraits of my sisters and me. While creating the work, I was experiencing two very different types of grief and wanted to investigate the series of emotions through my work. After years of depending on the two primary men in my life, I was forced into a lead position among my siblings. I was suddenly faced with more responsibility than I had ever encountered and I turned to my sisters in for emotional survival. Approaching Solace explores the role of women in my Greek American family as well as the dependency between my sisters and me and the objects that were left behind.
