Textile Paintings by Deborah Kruger
I long to live in a culture where there is a healthier balance of survival and creativity and where making art is central to daily life. I am especially drawn to indigenous art from West Africa and the Amazon Basin. The ragged beauty and use of commonplace fibers inspire me, as does the innate message that art making is both sensible and sacred.
Wax and fiber are both fluid, sensuous materials. Throughout history they have been employed together for surface design purposes. Here they fly off the surface combining in a new and more sculptural fashion.
This body of work grew out of my desire to make art that is more intuitive and less intellectual. The narrative here is the wordless conversation between the artist and her artwork and the magical combustion of hands and materials.
