CHICAGO — We are pleased to present ‘Is There a Mother in the House,’ an exhibition that explores the multiple facets of ‘Mother’ and her impact on their own lives and on the wider world. What is the meaning of Mother, and what House does she inhabit? What sway does a mother’s voice, presence, love—or lack of these things—have? Must one bear a child, or be a woman, to be a mother?
Juried by former Woman Made Gallery Director, Janet Bloch, the exhibition includes forty works in a variety of media by thirty-one artists from fifteen U.S. states.
In her statement, artist Anna Drew writes:
Mother
The mother builds the house; she does not just reside in it.
She rises from it.
She is renovating to proclaim her larger place in the world.
The prominence of her inhabitance intensifies.
She is you.
She is me.
She is woman.
Always the bad ass Mother.

Juror: Janet Bloch
Janet Bloch is an artist, administrator and author. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the recipient of numerous grants including an Illinois Arts Council Visual Artists Fellowship, a National Endowment of the Arts Regional/ Midwest Fellowship and three Artists Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. Bloch has had several solo exhibits nationwide, and her work is in numerous collections which include the South Bend Regional Museum of Art, Illinois State Museum, Deloitte and Eaton Corporations. She is the author of a workbook, Strategic Marketing Tools for Visual Artists. After co-directing Woman Made Gallery from 1993 to 2000, Janet Bloch is now the Executive Director at Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana.
