SUMMARY:Come (OUT) As You Are Poetry Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Woman Made Gallery on Friday\, June 20 at 6 PM for Come (Out) As You Are\, a vibrant Pride Month showcase celebrating queer joy\, identity\, and radical self-expression. This special evening will feature eight poets and writers sharing powerful\, original work that honors the many ways we come out\, show up\, and speak our truths. \nCurated with a focus on uplifting the voices of UIC students\, this event invites the community to gather in celebration of authenticity\, resilience\, and queer creativity. From bold spoken word to tender storytelling\, the night will hold space for reflection\, connection\, and visibility. \nFree and open to the public—come witness and celebrate the beauty of queer voices in full bloom. \nHosted by Jae Green and Le’Trice Buckingham. \nAbout the Juror:  Le’Trice Buckingham is a Chicago based multi-disciplinary artist whose practice weaves together visual art\, storytelling\, and poetry to subvert and conjure. Rooted in the transformative power of art\, her work engages with ancestral memory and the fluid intersections of history and imagination. Through bold abstract imagery and layered symbolism she creates spaces for reflection\, resistance\, and reimagining. As a storyteller\, Buckingham draws from oral traditions\, folklore\, and lived experiences\, infusing her narratives with rhythm\, movement\, and historical resonance. Her work has been featured in literary journals\, exhibitions\, and community-based art initiatives\, and she continues to cultivate spaces for creative expression through Art Conjure\, a collective dedicated to Black storytelling and visual artistic conjuration. \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Acts of Care: Nurturing the Present\, Shaping the Future
DESCRIPTION:Juried by Kristen Carter\, this exhibition defines care expansively while taking it as the base of our collective life. From child rearing to mobilizing a grassroots social movement\, to care for someone or something is to imagine and invest in the present for the sake of a better future\, however big or banal. Acts of Care: Nurturing the Present\, Shaping the Future also recognizes the gendered\, ableist\, classed\, and racialized terms of care\, and the often-invisible nature of care work as work. As such\, this exhibition gives space to see and explore different experiences and interpretations of care\, including but not limited to reproductive labor\, affective labor\, domestic work\, care work\, and/or any facet of social\, political\, cultural\, and ecological caretaking. \nView the exhibition here: https://womanmade.org/acts-of-care-nurturing-the-present-shaping-the-future/ \nThis event is free and open to the public! \n

SUMMARY:Constellation: Monica Ong and Visual Poets in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the experimental spirit of visual poetry in a book launch for Planetaria by Monica Ong\, who will be in conversation with some of today’s most exciting interdisciplinary poets Naoko Fujimoto and Kelcey Ervick. This multi-media poetry reading and Q&A features a luminous constellation of genre-defying authors whose work blurs the boundaries of text and image\, moving seamlessly across the arts and sciences\, through languages and geographies. An author book-signing and refreshments will follow. \nReading from her new collection Planetaria\, Monica Ong’s astronomy-inspired work\, which was exhibited at the Poetry Foundation\, invites us to consider poetry off the page as broadsides\, literary art objects\, and gallery installations\, her multi-disciplinary practice made legible in a book that is at once a poetry collection and artist monograph that explores motherhood\, women in science\, and diaspora identity.
